Later in the evening, I run my fingers back and forth, back and forth over those slick ivory keys in our quiet room. And I think now-now-now my mother will hear that little sparrow singing outside her bedroom window. And she’ll hear the hum and the whisper of the weeping willow tree.
The black piano sits in my mother’s living room. She tells me she's too old, my mother tells me that she’s too tired to play an instrument anymore.

Love the story, but even more so the form. The repeated phrase (back and forth) and the (not oft used enough) alliteration. (The repeated phrasing becoming a trademark of yours ;-)

This story called up a lot of emotion. I liked the way you used nature as a means of changing her mind. A bird and a tree can touch her heart and bring back the old days. The sounds of nature can bring peace and reminders of the good things in life.

So simple but so beautiful. Nothing happens, but everything happens. My Grandma had a beautiful piano in a quiet room. She never got over not being able to play when her fingers became gnarled with arthritis. This story made me miss her so much, and that’s great writing. Thank you, Angela, and well done.
